OPTI-UP: Optimizing and greening Public Transport networks through Integration with Urban Planning and data driven approaches

The OPTI-UP project aims to optimise public transport networks in small and medium-sized cities in Central Europe by integrating transport and land-use planning using data-driven approaches, while making public transport more environmentally friendly. This holistic approach is innovative because it takes into account the interdependence between land use and transport and considers the importance of data-driven decision-making in public transport planning.

The project involves a diverse range of partners from 7 countries (9 project partners – PP, 8 associate partners – AP), including local public authorities, sector agencies, infrastructure and service providers, interest groups including NGOs, higher education and research organisations and businesses. By working together, these partners bring their unique perspectives, expertise and resources to the project, which is key to its success.

The project will directly benefit 6 project areas (5 countries): Osijek in Croatia, Modena in Italy, Paks and Pécs in Hungary, Český Krumlov in the Czech Republic and Grosuplje in Slovenia. These locations face specific challenges such as slow recovery of public transport ridership due to the pandemic, inefficient long-term public transport planning and insufficient connectivity of suburban areas to urban centres.

The University of Technology and Economics in České Budějovice (VŠTE) is participating in the project as a full partner (PP). VŠTE will play a key role in the analysis of existing public transport networks and public transport planning practices in the selected cities. VŠTE will contribute to the development of a common strategy for sustainable and efficient public transport through detailed analysis and the use of data-driven approaches.
